What is Marriage: Part 1

Chad’s sermon notes–What is Marriage

Seems these days that every day on the news we see some legal struggle about marriage. Whether it be about gay marriage, or same-sex marriage, or polygamy, or divorce. If the trend continues, I think we will start to see marriages of 3 or of 4 or maybe people marrying their pets or whatever else their hearts desire. If our society redefines marriage then the sky will not be the limit. Satan is on a marriage war path, and he is successful because we do not know what a marriage even is, and I say that because, the battle is in the court room.

You may not understand what I’m saying but you soon will. What is marriage?

10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? Mal 2:10 (KJV)

Where does this vs take us? I want to turn your focus to three words in this verse. father and created turn our minds to Genesis. When you see covenant, what covenant comes to mind? We’ll come back to that, let’s first look at Father/ creator

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Gen 1:26-28 (KJV)

1 Who is our Father?

Eph 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 8

Mal 2:14-15 (KJV)

and the wife of thy covenant

Do you see here men that in order to have a wife, you have to enter into a covenant. Without covenant there is no wife.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Gen 2:24 (KJV)

So if Eve were Adam’s wife then Adam entered into a covenant, because without covenant there would be no wife. So where in scripture is the first covenant? What is covenant?

 covenant

from 1262 (in the sense of cutting (like 1254)); a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh):–confederacy, (con-)feder(-ate), covenant, league.

1262  a primitive root; to select; also (as denominative from 1250) to feed; also (as equivalent to 1305) to render clear (Eccl. 3:18):–choose, (cause to) eat, manifest, (give) meat.

1254  a primitive root; (absolutely) to create; (qualified) to cut down (a wood), select, feed (as formative processes):– choose, create (creator), cut down, dispatch, do, make (fat).

a compact made by passing between pieces of flesh (From Strong’s Concordance)

If you are like me, this is a lot to process at one time. So in order to fully understand the marriage blood covenant, I want to do a side-by-side comparison of the first three covenants, so to fully understand the first.

So we will, in this sermon series, compare the Eden marriage covenant, the Noahic covenant, and the Abrahamic covenant.

My first assumption was that the Noahaic and Abrahamic covenants would shed light on the marriage covenant but I have found that the marriage covenant has shed light on them.

Step one:  I want to look at the parties involved in this covenant.

Back to Gen 1:26

26 And God said

el-o-heem’     plural of 433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:–angels, X exceeding, God (gods)(-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty. (Strong’s Concordance)

You see that eloheem is plural and then the plural ness is confirmed with

Let us make man in our image, after our likeness

us and our confirm the plural

Mal 2:14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth,

Instead of eloheem we see yeh-ho-vaw’

(the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:–Jehovah, the Lord. (Strong’s Concordance)

This is the Lord used in the Abrahamic covenant and we will see the importance of this later just bring it to your attention now.

Strong’s number 5749

Mal 2:14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth,

This is where a word study proves interesting. My mind went straight to the thought that there has to be two witnesses for a marriage license just as you need two witnesses for Old Testament law or to establish anything in New Testament time.

Strong’s number 5707

De 17:6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.
De 19:15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

Mt 18:16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

Re 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth

The witness used here in De is derived or contracted from the witness in Mal 2:14 but is not the same word. The witness in De used in the old law is always translated witness. 100% of the time it means witness.

What about the witness used in Mal concerning his relationship with a man and his first wife?

Mal 2:14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth,

Hebrew Strong’s Number: 5749

Hebrew Word: ‏עוּד‎

a primitive root; to duplicate or repeat; by implication to protest, testify (as by reiteration); intensive to encompass, restore (as a sort of reduplication) :- admonish, charge, earnestly, lift up, protest, call (take) to record, relieve, rob, solemnly, stand upright, testify, give warning, (bear, call to, give, take to) witness.

—Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary

To be a witness as used in old testament law, you were like the witness in a modern-day court room. You take a seat and take an oath to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. Simple enough.

Mal 2:14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth,

The witness used in Mal 2:14 has the role of the witness in the witness stand

and the ability to testify in Protest, like a prosecuting attorney, or his witness, and can admonish or charge like a Judge. This witness has the power of the entire court room. This explains the relationship between God, a man and his first wife.

I know this is deep. But what I’m saying is back in Eden at the first Blood covenant, God’s as in Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit first Witness/Charge the Blood Covenant by creating a “Them” as in plural man.

Back once again to Gen 1:26 You fill in the blanks

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Gen 1:26-27 (KJV)

In the making of them, he first makes Adam so we need to look at the details of “Them” in chapter 2.

8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

Gen 2:8 (KJV)

1st Party involved is God’s: Father/Son/Spirit

2nd Party is Adam: the groom and his Father/ Creator

and then as a witness/charger  God makes a vow

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Gen 2:18 (KJV)

Notice this vow is made by the Father/Creator NOT by Adam. Read the story about Issac and Rebekah again for clarification.

Father/creator vow fulfilled

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Gen 2:21-23 (KJV)

Here we meet the third-party Eve the Bride and her Father/ Creator

Vows/ wedding

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Gen 2:24 (KJV)

So in summary we have 3 basic parties

God’s party of Father/son/Spirit as witness/ Judge / Attorney

Groom and his covenant party Father / Mother

Bride and her covenant party Father/ Mother

Eph 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Gen 2:24 (KJV)

Parties not mentioned:  Government,  State,  Church,  Priest

Application for today

If a same-sex couple get a marriage license from the state are they married?

In light of today’s scripture what does a same-sex couple lack?

God would not enter into a blood covenant with two men or two women

A same-sex couple lacks the hardware or tools to enter into a blood covenant

God did not vow to make Adam a male helpmeet

Thus He did not make him a male helpmeet.

A male helpmeet cannot meet the terms of use of a marriage

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth,

A same-sex union is not in God’s image

Them as in male and female is in God’s image a same-sex union would be in someone else’s image

I’ll give you a Christmas example There are two Kings in Judea. Herod and Jesus. One is a legitimate king and in the likeness of a Jew/real God, the other is an illegitimate king in the likeness of a half Jew/Satan’s pawn.

Herod/Satan team appears to be the most powerful.

Who is the real King?
