The Purpose of Marriage

Chad’s sermon notes

Let’s do a recap on marriage:

1 It is a blood covenant

2. It was created by its sole owner, our creator God. As owner, He sets the parameters, and rules. We are participants only. We are not owners and cannot change the rules. We also learned that He is our covenant witness. This witness has the full power of the courtroom.

3 We learned that there are 3 parties involved in covenant.

Our triune God, Father/Son/Spirit

a triune Groom, Groom/ Father / Mother

a triune Bride,   Bride/ Father/ Mother

and all their seed

4 Covenants have words, Those words are called vows, those vows are sworn.  There are rules to be followed by the vow takers. Examples being brothers and sisters cannot enter into covenant marriage. The vows of the Bride must be confirmed by her father. Children must have the consent of parents to marry. ect

5 One of the vows contain a Token or a sign

Rainbow/circumcision/ Land of Israel /Children

So when a young man goes up to his future father in law and asks for his daughter’s hand in marriage, there is the dreaded question. Why do you want to marry her?

You can’t tell him because she’s smoking hot. You can’t use any of the other selfish reasons floating around in your head. Many of us avoid asking her father because when the truth of why we want to get married comes out of our mouth it doesn’t sound good.

So what was God’s purpose for marriage? Should our purpose reflect God’s purpose? If we reflect God’s purpose, will answering the question be easy?

14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. Mal 2:14-15 (KJV)

You can see here that the purpose of marriage covenant is 2 fold

#1 is oneness–We will look at this principle next week

#2 is Godly seed or Godly Tokens from last week??????????

15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

Where you stand on purpose 2 is a reflection of where you stand on purpose 1. If you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, your marriage and it’s purpose will reflect that. As we look today at the purpose of marriage being Godly seed, you find yourself at odds with this then that is a reflection of the fact that your marriage is being operated under your will not under God’s covenant purpose. If you are operating under your will, you have not submitted to oneness with God, and his purposes for marriage.

What I’m saying is these 2 purposes go hand in hand, one reflects the other. Are you holding the cards, or is Christ?

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Gen 2:24 (KJV)

This verse reflects the 1st purpose

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Gen 1:26-28 (KJV)

Notice both purposes are reflected here, Both oneness with God and the Blessing of Godly tokens

Noahic

17 Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth. Gen 8:17 (KJV)

Notice that the Noahic covenant includes all living things not just people.

1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. Gen 9:1 (KJV)

Make us some Godly Tokens

18 And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan. 19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.Gen 9:18-19 (KJV)

Abrahamic

2 And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness Gen 15:2-6 (KJV)

Who’s in charge of this seed?  Who has birth control?

13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; Gen 15:13 (KJV)

18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: Gen 15:18 (KJV)

Both these vs are pre Isaac

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. 9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations Gen 17:1-9 (KJV)

15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. Gen 17:15-16 (KJV)

19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. Gen 17:19-21 (KJV)

16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: 17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. 19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba Gen 22:16-19 (KJV)

60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. Gen 24:59-60 (KJV)

 Ge 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

Mal 2:15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

There are two reasons listed in this vs why God created covenant marriage.

1 Oneness

2 Godly seed

If you get married for any other purpose, you probably will be disappointed.

If you get married, to fill the God shaped hole in your heart, your spouse will let you down. They cannot fill that hole.

If you get married for companionship, or to make you happy, you will be miserable because those are Christ’s roles.

Why is God looking for Godly seed?

  17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.

Keeping these two verses in mind

1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. 2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. 3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. 4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. 5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Psalms 127:1-5 (KJV)

Whether you realize it or not, we are at war, and in this war we fight, children are the ammunition. How important is ammunition in a war?

Would America be in the shape it is today if we would have pumped it full of Godly children?

We’ve heard teaching on evangelism. Do you realize that Godly seed owns the gates of the enemies. They cannot walk through their own gate without interacting with Godly seed. They cannot go to hell, without walking through a gate we own.

4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

Firing one arrow at the enemy is not effective. But if that arrow after it is fired joins in flight with a second arrow, it now carries a double punch. Let’s say that double arrow understands the purpose of its union, and multiplies into an arrow firing double arrow. Look out if those arrows do the same. It would be like a star burst. You want one of those fired at you?

I know many a Christian that doesn’t take the purposes of marriage serious today. In fact we have adopted sayings like, “Who would want to bring children into this world?” or “Who can afford children today?” A pastor recently told me, “You don’t have to fill that bus!”

So for application today I want to look at the heart of Christ in Lk 23 where he has been carrying the heavy cross to Calvary and he reached the point where he could no longer carry it and collapses before the crowd and they get Simon to carry it for him.

26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. 27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. 33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. Luke 23:26-34 (KJV)

They often say America is not in scripture, but today America is the green tree. America is called the wealthiest country in the world.

America today has accepted what Christ says here

Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

Planned parenthood proves this

What comes next?

30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

End times?   We need warriors!

Re 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
