How Long Does a Covenant Last?

Chad’s sermon notes

10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? 11 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god. 12 The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts. 13 And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand. 14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 16 For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. 17 Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we weariedhim? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment? Mal 2:10-17 (KJV)

This same passage that has taught us that Marriage is a covenant, and that this marriage covenant has two purposes.

1  It shows through its oneness that we all have one Father, our Creator, and in entering covenant marriage we become one with Him.

2 The second purpose is that this oneness with God seeks Godly seed.

Not only does it show us the two purposes of marriage, it tells us what this oneness with God looks like relationally. God is our witness between thee and the wife of thy youth.

1 This shows He has the full power of the court room between a man and his wife.

2 This relationship is witnessed by Him and He expects us to Hold true to His vows, and if we do not we will answer to Him as Judge, and owner/creator.

While this passage of scripture has taught us so much concerning marriage covenant, the message contained in this passage is about the putting away of covenant marriage. Or in English divorce, or separation. Separation being a better word, because not only does the man and woman separate but the oneness with our creator also is separated.

This is done by us in one of two ways.

#1

11 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (oneness)

God will not call you to marry someone who does not love His Son Jesus. (Remember Jesus is the way God took on the identity of Abram fulfilling his part of the oneness of covenant)

Covenant marriage is about being one with God. If you marry someone who is not one with God you break the Abrahamic covenant.

#2

16 For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away:

Divorcing or separating from your covenant marriage also breaks the oneness that God through Jesus seeks to have with us.

So how long does covenant  last?

12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: Gen 9:12 (KJV)

16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. Gen 9:16 (KJV)

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. 9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations Gen 17:7-9 (KJV)

13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. Gen 17:13 (KJV)

19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. Gen 17:19 (KJV)

Is there any situation where you can be loosed from marriage covenant keeping in mind that it is everlasting for perpetual generations?

1  Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. 4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. Romans 7:1-4 (KJV)

Mal 2:15B Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 16 For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away:

Men if you put away the wife of your youth, you force your bride into being either a lifelong widow or an adulteress.

Lets look at what Christ has to say about Divorce in light of

31  It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. Matt 5:31-32 (KJV)

3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? 4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. 7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. Matt 19:3-9 (KJV)

I want you to notice here that adultery is not cause for divorce. Divorce causes adultery. I’m so thankful Christ did not say that adultery is cause for divorce!

Mt 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Most of us are guilty of adultery, thus we would have cause for divorce.

So there must be a difference between fornication, and adultery, because one is cause for divorce and the other is not.

The definition of adultery is right in this verse, relations with someone other than the wife of your youth, yes even if you marry her, is adultery. Or relations with someone other than your husband of youth, yes even if you marry him, is adultery.

So what is fornication?

1Co 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

It’s a sin against your flesh

Isa 23:17 And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.

Fornication involves adultery for money .

Eze 16:26 Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger.

Here you see that fornication includes unequally yoked partners along with adultery for money. So basically we can add idolitry or spiritual adultry.

Reminds me of:

2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

1Co 5:1 ¶ It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

Here we see fornication can be incest.

 Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. {strange: Gr. other}

a primitive root (highly-fed and therefore wanton); to commit adultery (usually of the female, and less often of simple fornication, rarely of involuntary ravishment); figuratively, to commit idolatry (the Jewish people being regarded as the spouse of Jehovah):–(cause to) commit fornication, X  continually, X great, (be an, play the) harlot, (cause to be, play the) whore, (commit, fall to) whoredom, (cause to) go a-whoring, whorish.

I think fornication is someone who is ravished with adultery, who loves adultery, who will pay for adultery or who seeks to be paid for adultery. Someone who will commit adultery with someone or something that the Bible clearly teaches as wrong.

It’s an adultery addiction, much like a meth head would have with meth.

To summarize: the covenant is generational and everlasting. You are held to your covenant till death, or in a case of fornication.

Ro 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

What caused death?    Sin

Who’s sin?     Adam’s

So before Adam sinned how long would he have lived if he would not have sinned?

How long would he have remained one with Eve and God?

When was the first divorce?  When Adam and Eve broke their oneness with God

Mal 2:16 “For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce (NKJV)

Ro 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

What ends with the death of a person?

1  Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

Our oneness

3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. 4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. Romans 7:1-4 (KJV)
