Philippians 2:1-8 (KJV)
2 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
As Christians we show love to others because God first showed love to us (1John 4:19). How do we do that? We do that by thinking of the wants, needs, and desires of others more than our own wants, needs and desires. When we do this, we need to keep in mind God’s laws and commands and not go against His Words, but we should think of others first.
I remember being taught one way to have joy is to remember:
We often tell children, “Do unto others as you would have done to you.” This comes from Luke 6:31 and Matthew 7:12. As humans we often are selfish and think of ourselves. Frighting against that selfishness (dying to self) is something we need to do every day. Don’t we want others to put us first? Then we should do likewise; we should think of others first.
We shouldn’t fight to have our own way. We shouldn’t only be worried about ourselves and our won problems. We should be thinking about taking care of others and helping them fulfill their needs. When Christ is first in our lives, we will want to be like Him.
He thought of us more than himself. He didn’t want to endure the cross (Matthew 26:29 & 39), but He did for us. He put what we needed ahead of what He wanted. He put the desires of God before His own desires; He submitted to the Father.
Even though Christ is one with God and was here at the beginning with God (John 1:1-4), He humbled Himself and was obedient to God. He put us first even though it meant death for Him.
If we are to take any comfort in the love Christ showed for us, we need to do likewise. We need to show the same depth of love for others.
We can apply this to the physical needs, wants and desires of others, but we can’t forget their spiritual needs as well. We need to think about where they will spend eternity and put witnessing ahead of our fears and pride. Let us not sit comfortably living our own lives; let us think of the eternal life of others and put them first.
Prayer: Lord, may we put You first, others second, and think of ourselves last. May we provide for and care for the needs of others despite what it may cost us. May we stop being selfish and let others have their way as long as it doesn’t go against Your laws. Help us to love others and live peaceably.
